While a regular vehicle requires several liters of diesel to fill its tank, just 4.5 grams of a uranium pellet used in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant can generate energy equivalent to approximately 417 liters of diesel.As fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal gradually decline, Bangladesh is stepping into the era of nuclear energy. On Tuesday (April 28), a historic milestone is being marked with the loading of nuclear fuel at the country’s first nuclear power plant in Ishwardi, Pabna. With minimal uranium fuel, the Rooppur plant is expected to provide electricity across the country for years without relying on massive reserves of coal or oil.Uranium, the core source of nuclear energy, continues to spark public curiosity—particularly regarding how such a small amount can generate such vast power. Compared to burning tons of coal or large volumes of fuel for limited electricity, a tiny uranium pellet delivers an astonishing amount of energy.According to a report by BBC Bangla, nuclear fuel is far more energy-dense than conventional fuels. A single 4.5-gram uranium pellet can produce energy equivalent to about 400 kilograms of coal, 360 cubic meters of gas, or roughly 417 liters of diesel. In broader terms, one kilogram of nuclear fuel can match the energy output of 60 tons of fuel oil or 100 tons of coal.The report also highlights that safety remains a key concern in nuclear power generation. Nuclear fuel is carefully designed, stored, transported, and used to prevent radiation leakage. The first layer of safety lies in the fuel pellet itself, which is manufactured through a controlled process that keeps radiation contained within. Additionally, the pellet is encased in zirconium alloy cladding, ensuring that even if radiation escapes the pellet, it cannot pass through the outer layer.It is worth noting that Bangladesh is entering the final phase of nuclear energy utilization. With the loading of uranium fuel into the reactor core at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, the country is set to become the world’s 33rd nuclear energy user. Once inserted into the reactor, the uranium fuel will generate heat, producing steam from water, which will then drive turbines to generate electricity.
